As of the May 9, 2026 verification pass, this review focuses on practical fit: who should use Perplexity, where it feels strong, where it needs supervision, and when a cheaper alternative is the smarter choice. Perplexity’s pricing now spans five tiers from Free to Enterprise Max at $325 per seat per month, so the “which plan” question requires more thought than it did a year ago.

My rule of thumb: use Perplexity when it removes friction from a real workflow, not when it merely adds another AI tab to your browser. But that calculation got more interesting in 2026, because Perplexity evolved from an AI search engine into something closer to an AI operating system - one that orchestrates 19+ frontier models, ships its own browser, and runs autonomous digital workers.

The big question I’ll answer in this review: does any of that actually make your work better, or is it just impressive demos?

What Changed in 2026

If you haven’t checked Perplexity since late 2025, you’re looking at a fundamentally different product.

The headline launch is Perplexity Computer, which dropped on February 25, 2026. I described the outcome: “A competitive landscape for AI code editors, with pricing, funding, features, and recent news for the top 5 products, formatted as a slide deck.” Computer spawned sub-agents for each research thread, assembled the results into a presentation, and landed it in my files. The output wasn’t perfect - I verified two funding figures and reordered one slide - but it turned a half-day project into 15 minutes of review.

The March 6 update added three more pieces: Model Council (runs GPT-5.4, Claude Opus 4.6, and Gemini 3.1 Pro in parallel, synthesizing agreements and disagreements into one answer), Custom Skills (reusable workflow templates Computer remembers permanently), and the GPT-5.3-Codex coding subagent for building and deploying software directly within Computer. The core search product got upgrades too. Deep Research, upgraded in February, now runs on Claude Opus 4.6 for Max and Pro users, delivering what Perplexity claims is state-of-the-art benchmark performance. Pro Search on the free tier is capped at 5 queries per day, while Pro subscribers get 300. That free-tier cap is genuinely constraining - you’ll hit it by mid-morning on an intensive research day.

Comet and the Ads Exit

Perplexity also shipped Comet, its AI-native Chromium-based browser, in July 2025, with an iOS launch in March 2026. Comet Assistant handles in-page research, summarization, and autonomous multi-step tasks like booking flights and researching across tabs. The privacy positioning is aggressive: default private search, tracker blocking, no targeted ads. It’s Perplexity’s hedge against incumbents who are tying AI to their advertising businesses.

Which brings me to the most surprising 2026 move: Perplexity is winding down its entire advertising program, planning to exit fully by year-end. Model Council adds the ability to compare models on the same query - genuinely useful for high-stakes decisions where a single-model hallucination has real cost.

Agentic workflow execution. Computer is the closest thing to an AI coworker I’ve used that doesn’t require setting up a dev environment. I created a Skill for weekly competitive monitoring that pulls funding news, product updates, and hiring signals for five startups - it runs autonomously and lands in my inbox every Monday.

Enterprise privacy. The “no training on your data” guarantee, combined with SOC 2 Type II, HIPAA, GDPR, and PCI DSS compliance, makes Perplexity Enterprise viable for regulated industries. Where Perplexity Falls Short

Creative and writing tasks. If you want brainstorming, prose refinement, or open-ended creative exploration, ChatGPT and Claude are dramatically better. Perplexity will answer “what are common pitch deck mistakes” beautifully. Ask it to draft the actual narrative and the result feels flat.

Deep reasoning on non-searchable problems. For questions requiring multi-step logical reasoning rather than source synthesis - math proofs, strategic analysis - Perplexity’s search-first approach can miss depth. The research is impeccable; the reasoning sometimes isn’t deep enough.

Code execution. Unlike ChatGPT and Claude, Perplexity has no native code execution environment. The GPT-5.3-Codex subagent can write and deploy code, but you can’t iteratively run, test, and debug inside the platform. For serious programming, use Cursor, Claude Code, or GitHub Copilot.

Citation quality on sparse topics. When web coverage is thin - niche academic fields, emerging tech with limited documentation - source quality can dip to blog posts and circular citations. The tool can’t manufacture reliable sources where none exist.

Mobile weakness. Despite iOS Comet, Perplexity’s mobile app commands roughly 2% of U.S. AI chatbot daily active users, dead last among major players. The feature gap between web and mobile is real.

Google AI Mode has the distribution advantage - billions of users, AI answers integrated into existing search - but its answers often summarize the same top-ranking pages you’d see in traditional results, and ads are woven in. ChatGPT search offers the most natural conversational experience with seamless context, but its expanding ad program and secondary search integration make it better for exploration than verification. Perplexity sits between them: more research-focused than ChatGPT, more transparent than Google, uniquely agentic, and stubbornly ads-free. The weakness is reach: traditional search market share remains well under 2.5%.
